42nd Annual SFSU SKINS Pow Wow on May 6, 2017
Join us for the 42nd Annual SFSU SKINS Pow Wow on May 6, 2017 at San Francisco State University in San Francisco, California. Experience the sights and sounds of the powwow, a day filled with intertribal dancing and singing, and vendors showcasing their Native American arts and crafts, and families settled in their shade tents and lawn chairs to watch the dancers for the day.
Join the hundreds of people in attendance to get the Bay Area’s powwow season got off to an energetic start at San Francisco State’s cheekily named SKINS (Student Kouncil of Intertribal Nations). Everyone (sober) is welcome at SFSU SKINS Pow Wow, and Saturday’s attendees will include SFSU students, who get extra credit in Native American studies for attending, alumnae members, and visitors from around the area.
Grand Entry, that eye-popping parade of regalia-wearing participants dancing into a sacred center arena, accompanied by a drum circle, is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m.
No matter; the hundreds of people in attendance had countless diversions. There were children to stop running across the center arena (a major powwow no no), food to buy or unpack, old friends to hug and shake hands with. People had come from Stockton, Vallejo, Sacramento, farther. No surprise; Native people often drive long distances to see one another.
